The new Korn album comes by its title honestly: Following a pair of efforts on which the pioneering nü-metal band pushed its sound in unlikely new directions, “Remember Who You Are” presents a return to the moody but muscular style that drove such late-’90s landmarks as “Follow the Leader” and “Issues” to combined sales that exceeded 7.3 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

When Korn added ‘Remember Who You Are’ as the subtitle to their ‘Korn III’ album, the iconic band was making a statement that they’ve never forgot where they came from. Case in point: crafting the song and video for ‘Oildale (Leave Me Alone)’ around the area, shadowed by oil rigs, they all grew up in.

Korn will never forget where they came from: a dark place where salvation arrives in the form of twisted, throbbing guitar riffs, syncopated chaotic funk beats, a schizophrenic bass thump and an unmistakable cathartic howl. Emerging from the depths of Bakersfield, California with a sound unlike any other in 1994, Korn have been able to cement themselves as one of the most important bands in rock n’ roll history.
